The Sustainable Mountain Tourism Alliance (SMTA) is a network of initiatives, organizations, businesses, communities and individuals to encourage and implement the quantitative, comparable assessment and communication of sustainability in mountain regions where tourism is an important economy.
“If only sustainability labels were as easy to understand and widely accepted as ski run difficulty labels.”
Measuring sustainability is complex, and the SMTA proposes scientific research to develop, mainstream, recommend and implement existing and new sustainability assessment tools specific to the needs of mountain regions with a tourism based economy. Sustainability assessment should be quantitative and comparable.
Good practice, local experience and qualitative transition work and partnerships in communities need to complement the quantitative assessment results.
Transparent and trustworthy communication of the outcomes, including labeling, are important to raise public awareness and provide behavioral decision support tools for tourists, policy makers, and businesses.
